Abstract

1,118,473. Abrading. CROSS MFG. CO. (1938) Ltd. 14 June, 1967 [24 May, 1967], No. 24068/67. Heading B3D. [Also in Division F2] A method of finishing the working surface of the aluminium or other soft metal bore of a cylinder for an internal combustion engine comprises lapping the bore with a paste containing finely divided hard abrasive material. The abrasive material may be aluminium oxide, emery powder, green dust, or diamond dust. After lapping, particles of the abrasive material are retained in the surface of the bore which then acts as an external lap for the piston and piston rings, which may be of hard steel, to effect running-in of the engine. The products of the combustion of the engine coat the bore which is thereby provided with a low-friction smooth surface.
