Abstract

In a method of forming a low friction finish on the surface of a high-silicon aluminium-base alloy article, aluminium is preferentially removed from the surface to expose particles of silicon protruding above the aluminium surface and the protruding particles are mechanically smoothed. In an embodiment, the surface of the alloy is lapped to a rough finish using, for example, a mixture of aluminium oxide or silicon carbide and a mineral oil. Aluminium is then removed by lapping with a suspension or dispersion of finely divided elementary silicon in a mineral oil, and honing the alloy surface therewith to produce initially an attack on the aluminium alloy matrix, so removing the aluminium, and forming a surface in which the silicon crystals protrude above the alloy surface. Continued honing removes the sharp edges of the protruding silicon and provides a lowfriction glaze finish. The aluminium may be removed chemically, such as by etching with acid; and the glaze finish may be effected by the application of a metal surface under pressure, as for example by the reciprocating of a piston in a cylinder. The alloy may contain from 6-20 per cent by weight of silicon and may specifically comprise 16-18 per cent by weight of silicon, 4.2-4.9 per cent copper, up to 1 per cent iron, 0.45-0.65 per cent magnesium, 0.08-2 per cent titanium, up to 0.1 per cent manganese and the balance aluminium.
