Abstract
1456504 Treating metal machine parts; grinding LAYSTALL ENG CO Ltd 25 Oct 1973 [25 Oct 1972] 49150/72 Headings B3D and B3A [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A process for treating a surface of a metal machine part, such as a rubbing or bearing surface on a piston or cylinder, comprises deliberately impregnating the surface with particles of hard grit forced into the surface so as to become permanently embedded therein. The impregnation may be effected by applying pressure with a spring-loaded roller or other resiliently loaded tool. The surface, in the case of a cylinder liner, may be formed with oil-retaining grooves as a separate operation or simultaneously with the impregnating. In one example of treating a cylinder liner 10, Fig. 1, the liner is mounted so as to be engaged by the spring- loaded blades of a lapping tool which is simultaneously rotated and reciprocated while a slurry containing hard particles of grit, such as silicon carbide, is poured into the cylinder and cuts helical grooves 11 of opposite hand in the surface of the liner. Initially a light pressure of 10 p.s.i. or less without particle embedment is used followed by an increase in pressure to cause embedding of the particles 12. The grit size is 220 and the grooves have a width and depth of 0À001 mm. to 0À003 mm. The tool may be rotated at 170 r.p.m. and reciprocated five times per minute. A second operation using a grit size of 400-500 may follow to smooth the peaks off the grooves and embedded particles. In an embodiment for treating the surface of a piston P, Fig. 4, the piston is mounted on a rotary member 13 and is engaged by blades 14a which are spring pressed radially inwards towards the surface and axially into engagement with a swash plate 16. For treating an internal cylinder surface, the blades are spring pressed radially outwardly. The silicon carbide grit may be supplied in a liquid suspension or as a paste. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 992,743 and 1,372,171.
