Abstract
1,252,001. Reciprocatory fluid motors. BUTTERWORTH HYDRAULIC DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Jan. 28, 1969 [Feb. 12, 1968], No. 6795/68. Headings F1A, F1P and F1S. In a fluid-pressure operated reciprocatory motor a piston 1 reciprocates continuously or intermittently within a cylinder 2 and a spool 16 disposed radially thereto is actuated by a.cam surface 18 provided on the piston 1 to move in a cylinder 15 which opens into the piston cylinder 2 and wherein thrust means is located between the piston and its cylinder to oppose the radial force applied by the spool 16. The thrust means comprises a hydrostatic bearing recess 23 in communication with a constant pressure chamber 6 to provide a hydraulic pad to counteract the bias provided by the spool 16 on the piston 1. In a modification Fig. 3 (not shown) the hydraulic pad 23 is formed as a port annular recess (24) in the cylinder 2 and is in communication with the chamber 6 via a channel (25). The chamber 8 is alternately supplied with hydraulic pressure fluid and connected to exhaust via the port 14. The constant pressure chamber 6 is connected to a chamber 20 which biases the spool 16 for abutment of the follower 19 which may be a sphere, cylindrical roller, or needle bearing, with the cam surface 18. In operation the shaft 17 may be fixed to a framework and the shaft 4 to a tool so that the body 3 will reciprocate on the shaft 17 and hence impart a compound motion to the shaft 4.
