Abstract

1,221,242. Grinding. UNIVIS Inc. 2 Feb., 1968 [22 Aug., 1967], No. 5429/68. Heading B3D. A replaceable grinding pad for grinding lenses comprises a grinding pad formed about the surface of tool with which the pad is to be used, the pad having a grinding surface having substantially the same configuration and cuvature as the tool and means for receiving, retaining and distributing a quantity of abrasive slurry mixture. The pad 30, Fig. 2, is formed of sheet steel 0À005 to 0À010 inch thick which is pressed into the desired shape between the tool 16 and a block 12 of elastomeric material. If the pad is to have a toric shape, it may first be pressed to a spherical shape and then to a toric shape. The edge of the pad may be pressed' around the edge of the tool and the pad is secured to the tool by adhesive. The means for receiving, retaining and distributing the abrasive slurry may comprise grooves 46, Fig. 9, which are formed in the pad by being pressed, during forming of the pad, into groooves in the tool. In other embodiments, the means comprise various patterns of slots cut in the pad, Fig. 10. In a further embodiment, a succession of pads or a continuous pad 30c, Fig. 14, may be formed on the periphery of a wheel 52 from a blank 56 which is pressed on to the wheel by an elastic wheel 54.
