Abstract
1372171 Grinding LAYSTALL ENG CO Ltd 5 Oct 1971 [6 July 1970] 32720/70 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A method of manufacturing an internal cylindrical bearing surface comprises pouring a slurry of an abrasive powder or grit in a liquid medium into a cylinder whilst simultaneously urging or pressing the slurry into engagement with the cylinder wall surface on a helical path from one end of the cylinder to the other with a pressure such that a helical groove is cut into the surface and particles are embedded in the groove. The surface may be formed on the cylinder or cylinder liner which may be of metal or ceramic material of an internal combustion engine, pump or like machine. The abrasive is preferably silicon carbide grit and is pressed against the cylinder surface by a spring-pressed bladed lapping tool or multi-tooled spring-loaded housing rotated and reciprocated in the cylinder, the pressure being at least 20 p.s.i. The grooves have a depth, width and spacing of 0À001 to 0À003 mm., the abrasive particles, which are screened to be of substantially identical size, embedded in the grooves providing a hard wearing bearing surface.
