Abstract
1276459 Casting processes INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E O PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 18 June 1970 29583/70 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] Ingots 7 are produced by electroslag melting two groups of consumable electrodes 2, 3 dipping into a slag layer 6 in a cooled mould 1 and connected in series to the secondary winding 4 of a single phase transformer, each of the groups comprising a main electrode 2 stationary with respect to the mould 1 connected in parallel with an auxiliary electrode 3 movable with respect to the mould 1 to regulate the total current supplied and the degree of immersion of the stationary electrodes 2 in the slag 6. Solid flux added during the melting increases the depth of slag 6 and permits replacement of the movable electrodes 3 without interrupting the melting process. The mould 1 is long and narrow permitting production of slab ingots intended for direct sheet rolling. The melting process may be stabilized by electrically connecting the centre point O of the transformer to the slab ingot 7.
