Abstract

1275966 Rail fastenings COSTAIN CONCRETE CO Ltd 16 Oct 1970 [17 Oct 1969] 51227/69 Heading E1G To enable shims 16, of total thickness sufficient to raise a rail 1 to a height of about 1¢ inches, to be fitted under the rail, while ensuring a secure fastening of the rail by a known fastening arrangement comprising housings 3, embedded in a concrete tie 2, and spring clips 18 adapted to be slid axially into bores in the housings and to bear on the housings and rail foot 9, the latter being if desired provided with insulators 10, a channelshaped member 12 is positioned under the rail with its base 13 in contact with the tie and its flanges 14 between the rail foot and the housings 3, the shims together with a resilient pad 7 being fitted within the channel-shaped member. Short lengths of rod 15 are welded to the outer walls of the flanges and bear against the housings 3 to enable the flanges 14 to absorb lateral loads from the rail which, as shown, are transmitted through the insulators 10, longitudinal movement of the insulators 10 being prevented by end flanges 11 of the insulators engaging around the ends of the flanges 14. In order to allow fastening to be accomplished securely and with the correct tension over a range of shim thicknesses down to zero, i.e. including the case where the channel-shaped member 12 is omitted, the spring clips 18 are made in a range of sizes, and the insulators 10 are made in two sizes, i.e. that shown and a larger size such that its flanges 11 can embrace the housing 3 as in a conventional fastening of this type (Fig. 1, not shown).
