Abstract
1315517 Fastening railway rails W MUNCH 20 Oct 1970 [27 Oct 1969] 49795/70 Heading E1G In a railway rail fastening of the kind employing a bow-shaped clamping spring 1 formed of spring steel rod and caused to clamp the rail foot 3 by a bolt 7 and nut 8, the spring is formed such as to provide, in addition to the parts which respectively engage the rail foot 3 and mounting plate 6, a further part which either overlies the parts 2, as shown, crosses them (Figs. 5-9, not shown), or additionally engages the rail foot, as shown in Fig. 10, this further part being more stiffly sprung than the part initially engaging the rail foot, so that on further tightening of the clamp by the nut 8 the rail is gripped with an increased holding force, as in Fig. 1, or, if the clamp is tightened less than the full amount, e.g. as in Fig. 4, the increased holding force applies after a limited vertical movement x of the rail foot 3. In the Fig. 1 condition, a limited vertical movement y is still permissable. In the embodiment of Figs. 1-4 the clamping spring has end portions 2 contacting the rail foot, loop portions 9 contacting the plate 6, and a loop 10 surrounding the bolt 7 and providing the further part. The Fig. 10 construction is similar excepting that the further part is a downwardly bent loop 15 lying between the parts 14 contacting the rail foot and the bolt 7. In the embodiment of Figs. 5-9 (not shown) loops are formed between end parts (12) engaging the rail foot and transverse parts (13) which cross over the end parts and straddle the bolt (7), a loop being formed on the opposite side of the bolt to provide a part (11) engaging the mounting plate (6). The transverse parts (13) where they cross over the end parts (12) function similarly to the part 10 in the embodiment of Figs. 1-4. (For Figures see next column)
