Abstract

1275952 Reinforced cloth fabric B F GOODRICH CO 23 May 1969 [28 May 1968] 26375/ 69 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A reinforced cloth fabric has a flexible water-insoluble thermoplastic film coating partially impregnated into a surface of the cloth to effect a bond between the cloth fabric and the film coating, the surface of the thermoplastic film distal from the cloth being coated with an impervious barrier of a water-soluble film-forming material which is chemically unreactive with the thermoplastic film coating. The fabric may be woven or knitted and of natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton, cotton duck and wool. The thermoplastic material may for example be a vinyl polymer, polyolefin, acrylic polymer, polyurethane or a cellulose acetate butyrate polymer. Specified water-soluble barrier materials are methyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and the hydroxyethyl ether of cellulose. Preferably the thermoplastic coating is applied to the fabric by laminating the materials together under heat and pressure sufficient to cause the thermoplastic film to soften and become intimately associated with the fibres of the fabric: alternatively, a solution of the thermoplastic material may be sprayed, spread or brushed onto the fabric. A removable carrier backing may be used to support the thermoplastic film, in which case the watersoluble material may be applied as a solution either to the face of the backing or to the face of the thermoplastic film so as to form a layer sandwiched between the carrier backing and the thermoplastic film.
