Prior to entering the heater, the yarn passes through a zone in which the air is maintained at a temperature sufficiently high to vapourise the finish from the yarn and surface wall(s) defining such zone is/are maintained at a temperature sufficiently low to condense the vapourised finish, the condensate being drained and/or collected. As shown in Fig. 1, yarn 13, carrying perhaps 0.7-0.8% spin finish, passes through a tubular member defining a zone 17 in which air is maintained at a high temperature by convected air from the underlying heater 11 set in a heated block 12 insulated at 15. The vapourised finish condenses on the wall surface 18, which is in poor thermal contact with block 12 and is also cooled by ambient atmosphere acting on an outer grooved surface, and the condensate runs down an internal helical groove into an annular well 16a containing a replaceable absorbent wad 23. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, a condensate collection tray 30, having a drain (not shown), overlies the block 12 and upturned edges 26 of apertures 27 corresponding to the positions of_heaters 11 are covered by devices 16 each comprising a funnel with a castellated base and an upper end protruding through a cover 31.
