This invention concerns yarn drawing apparatus and has for its object the provision of new or improved apparatus for drawing synthetic yarns in vapours.
According to this invention, there is provided apparatus for drawing synthetic yarns in vapours after the shaping of such yarns, such apparatus comprising a boiler for producing vapours from a suitable liquid, a vapour treatment chamber arranged to receive vapours through which the yarn is adapted to be passed while being subjected to a drafting operation, a condenser situated above the vapour treatment chamber and arranged so that vapours condensed therein return to the boiler, a device for the introduction of the yarn into the vapour treatment at a linear velocity V and a device for the discharge of the yarn from such chamber at a linear velocity V the velocities V and V being so chosen that V 23 V In order that this invention may more readily be understood, reference will now be made by way of example to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE -1 is a longitudinal section through one em bodiment of apparatus according to this invention; and
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal section through a second embodiment.
Referring to FIGURE 1, the apparatus there illustrated comprises a boiler 1 surrounded by a jacket.2 for heating by means of a fluid or by electricity, a vapour treatment chamber 3 having a heat-insulating coating 4 and mounted above the boiler 1, a condenser 5 situated above the vapour treatment chamber 3 and surrounded by a cooling jacket 6, a device 7 for the introduction of a yarn at a peripheral velocity V a roller 8 carried by a rod 12 so as to be situated in the vapour treatment chamber, and a device 9 for the discharge of the yarn at a peripheral velocity V 23 V The yarn 10 carried along by the device 7 passes under the roller 8 and is taken up by the device 9 and, as a result of the difference of the peripheral velocities of devices 7 and 9, undergoes in the vapour treatment chamber a draw equal to When the apparatus is in operation, the heating jacket 2 boils liquid 11 situated in the boiler 1. The vapours thus formed enter the vapour treatment chamber 3 and condense on the cold walls of the condenser 5. The liquid thus formed trickles down the walls of the condenser 5 and of the vapour treatment chamber 3 and falls into the liquid 11 in the boiler 1.
Advantageously, the rod 12 on which the roller 8 is mounted may be arranged to be vertically movable in order that the yarn may be initially engaged around the roller 8 outside the vapour treatment chamber, so that such engagement operation is facilitated, the rod being lowered to the position indicated in the drawing after the positioning of the yarn.
The devices 7 and 9 may also be arranged to follow this movement, or alternatively the movable rod may comprise guide means which follow the movement of the rod so as to maintain the yarn in position during such movement.
FIGURE 2 illustrates a second embodiment of apparatus according to the invention, this apparatus comprising a boiler 13 surrounded by a jacket 14 for heating by means of a fluid or by electricity, a vapour treatment chamber 15 which is surrounded by heat insulation and by a heating jacket 16 and communicates with the boiler 13 through a pipe 17, a condenser 18 surrounded by a cooling jacket 19, a circular device 20 for the recovery of condensed liquid and a pipe 21 conducting the condensed liquid to a purifying device 22 before it is returned to the boiler 13 through a pipe 23, a device 24 for the introduction of the yarn, actuated at a peripheral velocity of V a roller 25 situated in the vapour treatment chamber and mounted on a rod 26 and a device 27 for the discharge of the yarn at a peripheral velocity V 3XV The yarn 28 carried along by the device 24 passes under the roller 25 and is taken up by the device 27 and undergoes a draw equal to When the apparatus is in operation, the heating jacket 14 boils liquid 29 contained in the boiler 13. The vapours thus formed pass through the pipe 17 and through the vapour treatment chamber 15 and become condensed on the walls of the condenser 18. The'liquid thus formed trickles down these walls. It is then collected at 20 and passes through the pipe 21 into the purifying device 22, in which the used liquid is separated from any impurities contained therein and emanating from products situated on the yarn subjected to the drafting which have been entrained by the vapours. The purified liquid thereafter returns to the boiler 13 through the pipe 23. .As in the preceding apparatus, it may be advantageous for the rod 26 on which the roller 25 is mounted to be movable in order to facilitate the positioning of the yarn and to permit the adjustment of the length of yarn introduced into the apparatus and consequently of the time for which the yarn remains in the apparatus as a function of its speed of travel.
The apparatus according to the invention is particularly suitable for use in the drawing of filaments consisting of polymers based on acrylonitrile in saturated steam, and the drawing of polyvinyl alcohol filaments. It may be used for the hot drawing of polyamides and polyesters in any vapours.
