Abstract

1275519 Winding and reeling; making coils ANO-COIL Ltd 1 July 1970 [11 July 1969] 31788/70 Headings B3A and B3E [Also in Division B8] A method of securing together adjacent windings at the ends of a coil 26 of strip e.g. an electrical coil, during the winding of the coil on to a mandrel 15 comprises feeding a length of adhesive tape 33, having a tacking strip 36, which has adhesive on both sides and is releasably supported on a cover strip 34 which is wider than the tacking strip, to the strip 20 so that the free tacky surface of the tape is pressed into contact with the strip, and the cover strip 34 bent in a direction longitudinally of the strip at a station at or upstream of a point where there is a change in the path of the strip feed to the mandrel so that the cover strip continues to follow the original path. At the start and near the end of the winding of the coils 26, a piece of the adhesive tape 33 is pushed forward in the guide 30 by a needle 50 piercing the projecting cover strip 37 and moving the tape longitudinally. The guide 30 has a stepped cross-section, Fig. 3, so that the tacking strip 36 can run contact free in a channel 40, be cut to the required length by a knife 58 and applied to the strip. The cut tape travels with the strip under rollers 62 and at the same time a web 68 forces the projecting cover strip 37 upwards, Fig. 4, to form an angle section. The strip then travels round a deflecting edge 25 downwardly to the mandrel 15 and in doing so the tacking strip 36 is drawn away from the cover strip 34 which proceeds straight ahead because of its longitudinal stiffness.
