Abstract

1414332 Plugging pipettes JOHN POULTEN Ltd 12 Oct 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 52144/72 Heading B1X Apparatus for inserting a fibrous plug into the end of a hollow member comprises means for severing a portion of a fibrous strand which is to form the plug from a length thereof, the means having a knife edge, a relatively movable roller arranged to roll along the knife edge and means urging the roller into contact with the knife edge. As shown, (Fig. 4) a strand of twisted cotton wool is fed from supply reel 20 via guide 32 across knife edge 31. A member e.g. a pipette to be plugged is inserted at 2. A carriage 6 (Fig. 3) reciprocates in groove 24 so that roller 28 thereon co-operates with the knifeedge to cut off a piece of cotton wool which is then pushed by probe 7 into the end of the pipette.
