730,131. Making brushes. AKTIEBOLAGET HUSQVARNA BORSTFABRIK. June 17, 1953 [June 21, 1952], No. 16780/53. Class 19. [Also in Group V] Heated plastic material is extruded through a die in the nozzle 1 of an extrusion machine to form a curved strip which feeds into a guide 2, in the form of a pipe with a slot in its top edge narrowing in the direction of feed. A ribbon of bristles 4 arranged transversely to the feed direction is conveyed by an endless belt on to the plastic strip, together with a superimposed thread 5 of metal or plastic material, being guided and pressed on to the strip by a stationary member 6. The member 6 may have a peripheral groove for guiding the thread 5, or may be replaced by a rotatable roller. In passing through the guide 2, the bristles are bent up round the thread 5, while the plastic strip is bent around both and its edges pressed together so as to clamp the bristles. A feed device comprising a pair of driven rollers may be provided beyond the end of the guide 2. Both the guide 2 and the member 6 may be provided with cooling means. As shown, the thread 5 is located at the centre of the bristles 4; it may, however, be located near one end, more especially where the bristles are of tapering form.
