Abstract

710,230. Making brushes. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. July 10, 1952, No. 17457/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] A circular brush (see Group XXIII) is formed by a machine, Fig. 2, which winds the channel shaped back filled with brush material into a helix from which single loops may be cut and which comprises a helically grooved mandrel 14 supported at one end by the shaft of a motor 13 mounted on a platform 10. This platform slides on ball bearings in guideways 6 on the machine base. The left hand end of the mandrel is supported by three rollers 21 forced into engagement with the groove so that as the mandrel rotates it also moves to the left. The end of the channel is laid on its side in the end of the groove and held in position between an eccentrically mounted clamp 26 and teeth in the groove. The channel material is fed under back tension as the mandrel rotates. The base of the groove slopes upward so that the inner free edge of the channel back is not compressed during bending as much as the base edge and wrinkling is thus avoided. In an alternative machine, Fig. 12, for continuous operation the channel back 30 is drawn against back tension by three driven rollers 48, 49, 50 onto a helically grooved rotating mandrel 14 housing three idler rollers 42, 43, 44. An automatic cutter 63 operates after each predetermined length of channel has been wound. In a further machine, Fig. 16, the channel back is wound onto a spiral mandrel. Specification 645,407, [Group XXIII], is referred to.
