Abstract

A device for the automatic cutting and feeding of wire particularly corrugated wire for brush manufacture ensures satisfactory severing of the wire and its uniform distribution when fed to a brush-making machine. The device comprises a feed roller 1, a pressing roller 2, a wire guide 3, a blade 4 and a grooved rotatable drum-type distributing magazine 5 which are operatively connected via gear wheels, chains and other mechanical elements to a drive motor. The severed length of the strand 7 of wire is determined by adjustment of a connecting rod which is attached to the feed roller 1. The feed roller 1 and the pressing roller 2 push the wire through the guide 3 into the grooves in the drum-type magazine 5. When the feed roller 1 has completed its feeding movement, the strand 7 of wire is cut off, whereafter the drum-type magazine 5 rotates and deposits the cut-off strand of wire on the brush-making machine. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Automatic wire cutting and feeding device for brush manufacture This invention relates to a device for automatically cutting off and evenly feeding corrugated wire for brush manufacture.
German Published Specification 2552213 discloses a device for brush making, in which the bristle material is first drawn off a magazine roller via feed wheels and then fed to a cutting device. Indexing wheels provided with pawls feed a precise length of bristles, but the lever mechanism of the feed device makes its construction very complicated and therefore liable to wear. Such device is unsuitable for the making of circular or strip-type brushes, since the device has no means of feeding the cut-off lengths of wire. The device is suitable only for processing plastics bristles on inserting machines for brush manufacture. German Published Specification 1632375 discloses a device for severing bundles of bristles of a predetermined length for brush manufacture, the bundles of bristles being uniformly distributed to a conveyor belt by rotatable drums.
The bristles are already stacked in cut-off lengths in a magazine. The device is therefore unsuitable for processing corrugated wire, since the individual corrugated wires would get so hooked into one another that to separate them would be an extremely elaborate matter.
It is an object of the invention to obviate the disadvantages of the prior art and to provide a device which enables corrugated wire to be processed for brush manufacture, in order to automate the previous manual operations, which are monotonous and harmful to health.
The invention aims at providing a device for cutting and feeding corrugated wire which reduces to a minimum the hooking of the wires into one another. The invention also aims at providing a uniform distribution of the corrugated wires so that the brushes have an even density of wires inserted into them.
Accordingly, the present invention consists in an automatic wire cutting and feeding device for brush manufacture, having a feed roller, a wire guide, a cutting blade and a rotatable grooved drum-type magazine for laying and distributing strands of wire cut to size, characterised in that the feed roller, the blade and the rotatable drum-type magazine are operatively connected via gear wheels, chains and similar mechanical elements to a driving motor, the blade being disposed between the drum-type magazine and the wire guide, and the guidepath of the strand of wire being in alignment with the drum-type magazine groove to be supplied. In operation a strand of wire of thin diameter is disposed on the storage roller, thus immediately reducing the extent to which the wires get hooked into one another. The strand of wire is drawn off the magazine roller by a pressing roller, co-operating with the feed roller, and inserted into a groove in the rotatable drum-type magazine. On completion of the feed movement, a predetermined length of strand of wire is severed.
The cut-off length of the strand of wire is then conveyed step-by-step downwards by the rotating drum-type magazine and drops on to the brushmaking machine when a respective groove in the drum-type magazine is vertically aligned with the brush-making machine.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawing which illustrates diagrammatically and by way of example an embodiment of an automatic wire cutting and feeding device.
Referring to Figure 1, an electric motor (not shown) drives a feed roller 1 via a pulley, to which a connecting rod is attached in a slot, a strand 7 of wire effecting a feed movement only when the connecting rod moves forwards. Adjustment of the connecting rod in the slot of the driven pulley varies the feed movement and therefore alters the length of the strand 7 of wire to be cut off. A pressing roller 2 forces the strand 7 of wire against the feed roller 1. A wire guide 3 ensures that the strand 7 of wire is precisely fed into a groove in a drum-type magazine 5. On completion of the feed movement, the adjusted length is severed from the strand 7 by a blade 4. The blade 4 is also actuated by the electric motor via a connecting rod. After the strand 7 of wire has been severed, the drum-type magazine 5, driven via a pair of bevel gears and a Maltese cross, is rotated through a predetermined angle, so that the strand 7 of wire severed to a predetermined length can be deposited from the groove in the drum-type magazine on to a brush-making machine 6. To obtain a correct sequence of cycles, the whole installation is driven by a motor, the individual constructional groups being positively so interconnected by gear wheels, chains and other known mechanical elements, that when the feed roller 1 has completed the feed movement, first the blade 4 and then the drum-type magazine 5 are set in motion. Afresh cycle is initiated by the renewed movement of the feed roller 1.
