A tundish from which metal pours continuously into a mould is fed by at least two unheated ladles filled successively but discharged partially simultaneously so that the temperature of the metal in the tundish is maintained within a given range (e.g. 1250-1280‹ C. if grey iron pipes are being cast), which is a narrower range than that through which the metal cools in each ladle. The method may be used in continuous casting plants. If three ladles are used, always at least two are discharging. In the tundish, there is mixed the metal from one ladle at a temperature below the given -range with the metal from another ladle which is at a temperature above or within the range.
