A plate or strip rolling mill is provided with work rolls which are bent to compensate for deflection of the rolls under load, flexing beams 30 and 31 being associated with the work roll chocks both for bending the rolls and for facilitating removal of the rolls from the mill. In a 4-high mill the backing rolls may also be bent. In the embodiment shown, U-shaped housings 1 and 2 are secured by tensioned tie-rods to housing caps 3 and 4. The housings are supported on sole plates 7 and provided with upper and lower girders 6 and 8, the girder 6 following screwdown movements of the upper rolls. To the upper girder 6 are coupled cylinders 21 and 22 for bending the backing roll 20, and cylinders 36 and 40 for bending flexing beams 30, and hence the upper work roll. To the lower girder are coupled cylinders 11 and 12 for bending the lower backing roll 17. The lower work roll is bent by means of cylinders 40, Fig. 2, which act on pivoted levers 42. The levers bend flexing beams 31 associated with the work roll chocks. The beams can support scraping, cooling, or lubricating equipment for the mill. To remove the work rolls from the mill, spacers are positioned between the work rolls and the flexing beams 31 are raised. The rolls are then supported by the chocks 28 on rails 31b of the beams, and can be slid from the mill on to aligned rails 50. The four rolls can be removed by placing spacers between respective roll chocks and sliding out the resulting assembly on rails 53 and 52.
