Abstract
1,271,821. Transformers; inductors; switch contacts. MIDLAND TRANSFORMER CO. Ltd. 16 Dec., 1969 [28 Sept., 1968], No. 46191/68. Headings H1N and H1T. A rectangular coil 10 is tapped on load by two assemblies 19, 22 which are moved either alternately or together along the coil surface and which consist of carbon rollers 21, 24 connected in parallel with brass rollers 20, 23 respectively. The brass rollers 20, 23 break before making as they move along arcing-resistant contact strips 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b &c. which are separated by broad, flush insulation strips 18. The carbon rollers 21, 24 make before breaking as they move along central portions 11c, 12c &c. of the coil turns and bridge adjacent turns across narrow, recessed insulation strips 17. The assemblies 19, 22 are connected to the ends of a choke of which a centre tap is connected to the load or supply, the choke thus acting in addition to the carbon rollers to limit circulating currents. One assembly passes entirely from a first turn to an adjacent turn before the other assembly leaves the first turn. The assemblies are preferably moved with a snap-action and alternate motion may be produced by a Geneva mechanism. The two contact assemblies may alternatively comprise simply a carbon roller (25, Fig. 7, not shown) and a brass roller (26) moved alternately and connected in parallel with no intervening choke.
