Abstract
1,271,681. Arc electrodes. C. CONRADTY. 15 April, 1969 [24 May, 1968], No. 19143/69. Heading H5H. [Also in Division C1] To prevent the escape of arc stabilizing, ionizing gas through the porous walls of a hollow carbon electrode, the bore is made gas impermeable. Various sealing procedures are described. The surface of the bore may be sealed by carbonizing materials in the absence of air, suitable impregnating materials being tar, pitch, synthetic resins or sugar solutions. The bore surface may be impregnated with waterglass and then heat treated so that the pores are filled with silica. Pyrolitic carbon may be deposited on the surface of the bore to render it gas-tight. Metallic coatings may be used to effect sealing, deposition being effected by electrolysis or by the decomposition of organic metallic compounds. Instead of coating the surface, a metal tube or gas impermeable carbon or graphite tube may be pressed into the surface of the bore. The sealing materials may also assist in stabilizing the arc, suitable ionizing additives being potassium fluoroborate potassium sulphate, tungsten carbide, or titanium carbide. Gunite can also be used as sealing process.
