Abstract

PURPOSE:To form a blackened layer having superior corrosion and heat resistances and a long life on a metal by causing glow discharge on the metal surface in vapor of an org. substance using the metal as a cathode and the wall of a treating vessel as an anode. CONSTITUTION:A voltage is applied to metal 1 to be treated as a cathode and the wall of treating vessel 7 as an anode in vapor of an org. substance in evaporating vessel 11 provided with heater 13. The interior of vessel 7 is kept at a predetermined vacuum degree with a vacuum pump connected to exhaust pipe 10, and glow discharge is caused on the surface of metal 1 while feeding N2 and H2 required for ion nitriding into vessel 7 from gas feed pipe 9. Thus, the vapor is partially decomposed to form a blackened layer based on metal and carbon and having superior corrosion and heat resistances, superior mechanical strength and a long life on the surface of metal 1.
