Abstract

1,271,025. Photographic hardening baths. EASTMAN KODAK CO. July 3, 1969 [July 5, 1968], No. 33565/69. Heading G2C. A method of processing a photographic colour material comprises pre-hardening the material before any development step with an aldehyde hardening bath and after at least one development step further hardening the material with a bath containing an acid solution of a zirconium salt hardening agent e.g. zirconyl sulphate, zirconium sulphate, zirconium nitrate, zirconium ammonium sulphate or zirconium sodium sulphate. Aluminium salts may be used with the zirconium salt, especially when the emulsion primarily contain gelatine, e.g. aluminium chloride sulphate or nitrate or potassium aluminium sulphate. The bath containing the zirconium salt preferably has a pH of 3 to 6 and may be a thiosulphate stopfixing or fixing bath. The photographic colour material may be treated with an aldehyde neutralizing bath after pre-hardening and before development. The hardening bath may be in package form comprising a first package containing zirconyl sulphate and aluminium sulphate and a second package containing thiosulphate which, when mixed with the appropriate quantity of water and an acidifying component form the hardening bath.
