Abstract
1,269,035. Ionization counters. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 29 Jan., 1970 [31 Jan., 1969], No. 4236/70. Heading HID. [Also in Division G1] A Geiger-M³ller tube has a plurality of cathode cylinders 12, 13 each of different axial cross-sectional size arranged end to end about a common anode wire 7 and having a common gas-filling, and a gas-pervious ionization barrier 9, 10 between adjacent cylinders. The chromium-iron cathode cylinders 12 and 13 are supported on shoulders of sintered glass plugs 8, 9, 10 and 11. Plugs 9 and 10 have apertures through which the chromium-iron anode wire 7 passes with sufficient clearance to allow for passage of gas but of sufficient length to inhibit ionization coupling between the two tube portions. A ring 14 secured to the anode wire 7 by means not shown is of such size as to equalize the Geiger threshold in the two tube portions. The same effect may be achieved by providing a link in a portion of the anode wire 7 in cylinder 13. The solid cathode cylinders 12 and 13 may be replaced by helically wound ribbons. Three or more cathodes may be provided and graded in size according to the exposure rates to be monitored, thus enabling a wide range of exposure rates to be monitored with a single tube. A simple monitoring circuit is described (see Division G1)
