[Also in Divisions A4 and E2] A compressible floor covering for athletic or gymnastic use includes a laminate made up of compressible material 13 such as padding or polyethylene foam blocks and a cover 11 or 12 of rigid or flexible sheet material such as polyvinyl resin-impregnated nylon fabric on one, and usually both, face(s) of the compressible material and maintained in laminate relation therewith without relative bodily shifting by one or more fastening devices 20 having first and second retaining heads 22 and 23 disposed at the opposite ends of an axially stretchable shank which, while in a stretched condition, passes transversely through the compressible material and the cover on at least the face of the floor covering which contacts the floor, a surface of the first head being in overall contact with the cover and remaining exposed outside that cover, the length and nature of the shank being effective to maintain it in a stretched condition upon compression adjacent said device and to maintain contact of the first head with the floor. The fastening device is usually integrally formed of elastomeric material and the shank may have a hollow core opening at the head 22 to enable insertion of the device with a rod-like driver. The compressible layer may comprise a number of foam blocks either abutting each other, in which case a row of fasteners may be equally spaced along the centre line of each block, or having overlapping portions through which a row of the fasteners may be passed. When a cover is provided on each outer face, the upper cover may be folded down and sewn to the lower one to form a lap seam and the fastening device may pass through both or only the lower of the covers.
