Description

March 23, 1965 D, 5, GIBSON ADJUSTABLE PILLOW-ROLL Filed March 19, 1963 INVENTOR. D R l550- Arm/Mays:
United States Patent g 3,174,163 ADJUSTABLE PILLOW-ROLL Doris S. Gibson, 4721 41st St,
Long Island City 4, N.Y. Filed Mar. 19, 1963, Ser. No. 266,327 1 Claim. (Cl. -338) This invention relates to pillows; I Anobject of 1 e invention is to provide a pillow having endswliich are positioned eldseto the sides of the sleepers head to provide a comfortable and encompassing pillow which is highly effective for inducing sleep.
Another object is to provide a pillow of the type indicated which has rolled ends that are movable toward and away from each other to form an adjustable space for the sleepers head so that parts of the pillow can be positioned close to or at varying distances from the sides of the head, as desired or as required by the sleeper.
A further object is generally to provide an improved pillow.
The above and other objects, features and advantages of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description of the invention considered in connection with the accompanying drawing of an illustrative embodiment of the invention in which:
FIG. 1 is a bottom plan view of the pillow with one end unrolled and the other end secured in a rolled conilion;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the pillow;
FIG. 3 is a yertical sectional view, on a larger scale, taken on li'rle 3-3 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 4 is a vertical sectional view, on a larger scale, taken on line 44 of FIG. 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the pillow It) comprises an elongated resilient member 12, preferably foam rubber, whose ends 14 and 16 are rollable toward and away from each other to form longitudinally spaced rolled ends 18 and 20. The rolled ends form a space 22 therebetween for the head H of the sleeper. It is to be observed, as best seen in FIG. 2, that the rolled ends can be placed adjacent to or in contact with the sides of the sleepers head. In this manner the pillow encompasses the sleepers head and is highly effective in inducing sleep for many persons. The back of the head lies on the part 24 of the pillow member between the rolled ends.
The pillow is provided with a pillow case 26 of suitable material which forms a sheath to enclose the pillow in the usual fashion. One end 28 of the pillow case is open for insertion of the pillow.
The rolled ends 18 and are secured in their adjusted positions by straps 30 and 32 which are made from ribbon and are sewn to the opposite ends of the foam rubber member 12. More particularly, each strap comprises a length of ribbon which extends along the companion end of member 12 and extends from the opposite side edges 34 and 3d of the member. The part of the ribbon which extends along the end of the member is folded over the top and bottom of the member, as best seen in FIG. 3, and is connected to the member by lines of stitching 33 and 40. The edges 42 of the ribbon, which extend from the edges 34 and 36 of the member, are sewn together by lines of stitching 44 and form a loop 46, at one end of the ribbon. The loop is provided with a pair of rings 48 and the opposite end of the ribbon is looped through the rims, in the usual fashion, to tie the opposite ends of the ribbon straps to each other, as best seen in FIG. 1. The pillow case is provided with apertures 58 to permit the adjacent straps at each end of member 12 to pass through the pillow case.
While the pillow has been described as one made of foam rubber to provide a resilient pillow member 12, it is also within the scope of the invention to provide an inflatable pillow member, in lieu of one made of foam rubber. It is also to be understood that while I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, the invention may be embodied otherwise as herein specifically illustrated or described, and that certain changes in the form and arrangement of parts and in the specific manner of practicing the invention may be made without departing from the underlying ideas or principles of this invention within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A pillow comprising, an elongated unitary resilient member having oppositely and longitudinally spaced ends and transverse oppositely spaced edges extending between said ends, said ends being rollable toward and away from each other to form an adjustable space therebetween for a persons head, said ends being in said rolled condition and thereby forming said space therebetween with the portion of said member extending between said rolled ends providing a bottom wall for said space and a cushion for the persons head, and means for releasably holding said rolled ends in said adjustable position, said holding means comprising a pair of strips of fabric at each of said ends extending from opposite edges thereof to a position at one side of said member opposite the side of said member at which said rolled end is positioned, the opposite ends of each pair of strips being releasably connected to each other.
