Mattress for a convertible bed or sofa The present invention relates to a mattress for a convertible bed or sofa.
In general, single beds or sofas that converge to allow two people to sleep comfortably convert to a double bed twice the width of the single bed, or include a removable frame and an additional mattress. so to can be transformed into two single beds of similar dimensions. Such a transformation is not always convenient, however, since the space occupied when the bed or sofa is arranged for two people may be too large, converting a single bed to a double bed of twice the original width requiring either that the single bed be very narrow or that the double bed be excessively wide.
It is generally considered that a two-person bed should be approximately fifty percent greater in width than a single bed. The latter may be one meter wide, for example, and the most common width for the double bed may be 1.5 m. The current rental conditions lead to building quite small rooms, especially when they are only occasionally to be bedrooms , and the current trend is not to overload a room with furniture but to leave the maximum amount of free space on the expensive side.
The same situation may be encountered, for example, in hotels where a number of bedrooms are to be small and normally used with a single bed, but which may sometimes need to be converted into bedrooms to two beds.
It is an object of the invention to provide a mattress for one person which can be easily converted to accommodate two persons. The mattress according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises at least two parts having shapes such that they can engage each other so to be able to occupy a first position in which the mattress has a first width, and a second position in which the mattress has a second width of 50% greater than the first,
the upper and lower surfaces of the mattress being continuous in both positions.
The mattress may be such that it has a first thickness in the first position and a second thickness equal to two thirds of the first thickness in the second position.
The appended drawing represents, by by way of example, an embodiment of the mattress according to the invention and illustrates the use of this mattress in a convertible bed.
Fig. 1 is an end view of this embodiment in a first position.
Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to FIG. 1 in a second position.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one end of a bed frame in a first position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view corresponding to FIG. 3 in a second position, and fig. 5 is a section along V-V of fig. 4.
The mattress 1 (fig. 1 and 2) comprises a first part 2 and a second part 3 similar and opposite, and a third part 4. These parts all have the same maximum thickness. The first and second parts 2 and 3 have surfaces 5 and 6 which are each half the width of the upper surface 7 of part 4, the upper surfaces 8 and 9 of parts 2 and 3 having longitudinal recesses < B> 10 and 11 each having half the width of the corresponding lower surfaces of those parts.
The lower surface 12 of part 4 has on its lateral edges longitudinal recesses 13 and 14, the width of which is equal to a quarter of the total width of the upper surface 7 of part 4. The depth of each of the recesses 10, 11, 13 and 14 is equal to half of the thickness maximum amount of each of parts 2, 3 and 4.
The mattress is shown to in fig. 1 in the position of use on a single bed, and in this case parts 2 and 3 are contiguous and their lower surfaces 5 </ B > and 6 form a continuous bottom surface for the mattress, while the recesses 10 and 11 join in the 'one to. the other to receive the central part of the lower surface 12 of the part 4.
The upper surface 7 of part 4 forms a continuous upper surface for the mattress. It is understood that with the relative dimensions indicated for the various parts, the mutual engagement of these parts allows an assembly without void and presenting continuous surfaces.
The mattress is shown to in fig. 2 in the position of use on a double bed. Parts 2 and 3 have been moved at a distance from each other and so that the recesses 13 < / B> and 14 respectively engage the recesses 10 and 11. A continuous lower surface is formed for the mattress consisting of the lower surfaces 5 and 6 of parts 2 and 3 and by the central part of the lower surface 12 of part 4, as well as a continuous upper surface constituted by the upper surfaces 8 and 9 of parts 2 and 3 and by the upper surface 7 of part 4. A again, no void remains between the parts.
It can be seen from the relative dimensions of the various parts that the arrangement shown to in FIG. 2 gives a mattress with a thickness equal to two-thirds of the thickness of the mattress in in fig. 1, but 50% larger in width.
The weight of the various parts of the mattress is generally sufficient to hold the assemblies of FIGS. 1 and 2. However, these parts can be fixed to each other by fasteners, for example to zippers or to </ B> button-prmion, along lines of join 15. It is also obvious that the parts could be arranged in an inverted position of to </ B> that of fig. 1, the surfaces 5 and 6 constituting the upper surface of the mattress.
A simpler construction could be envisioned by using half of the arrangement according to figs. 1 and 2, the, part 2 and the left half 16 of part 4 ending at the dotted line 17. < / B> This arrangement could be transformed to give half of the structure shown in in fig. 2 which would also end at line 17. Note that in this case the line of junction 15 in the arrangement according to FIG. 2 would be placed asymmetrically in the case of the two-seater bed, this arrangement being more advantageous than the three-part embodiment described and shown.
The mattress can be made of foam rubber, plastic foam or with springs in the usual way, or even by combining these means.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 illustrate the use of the mate las described on a bed or a convertible sofa. The bed comprises a frame comprising two mutually engaging elements 18 and 19 , generally similar in shape but arranged opposite to each other to each other.
The frame comprises side pieces 20 and 21, a base comprising a number of adjoining slats 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 and a head made up of two panels 27 and 28. The side piece 20, the slats 22, 24 and 26 and the </ B> panel 27 constitute parts of the frame element 18, tan say that the side piece 21, the slats 23 and 25 and the panel 28 constitute parts of the frame element 19. One end of each batten 22, 24 and 26 is fixed to the lower edge of the side piece 20 and the other end of these slats is fixed to the upper surface of a longitudinal support 29.
Similarly, one end of the slats 23 and 25 is fixed to the lower edge of the side piece 21, the other end of these slats being fixed to the upper surface of a longitudinal support 30. The supports 29 and 30 extending over the entire length of the frame, one end of the support 29 being secured to one end of the panel 27 , the other end of which is fixed to the side piece 20; likewise, the corresponding end of the support 30 is fixed to one end of the panel 28 whose other end is fixed to the side piece 21. The support 30 passes under the panel 27 or in a not shown slot formed to this effect in this panel.
It may be noted that the other end, of the bed, or the foot of the bed, can comprise panels similar to the panels 27 and 28, possibly of less height.
Figs. 3 and 4 clearly show how the two frame elements can be engaged with each other, the slats 22, 24 and 26 sliding on the support 30 </ B> in positions between the slats 23 and 25, while the latter slide on the support 29 in positions between the slats 22, 24 and 26.
A their end adjacent to the headboard, the side pieces 20 and 21 respectively carry blocks 31 and 32 </ B > receiving legs 33 and 34 ending in casters 35 and 36, supports 29 and < B> 30 having recesses 37 and 38 to receive the blocks 32 and 31, respectively , when the frame is in the position shown in in fig. 3. Similar blocks and feet, not shown, are used at the other end of side pieces 20 and 21.
The supports 29 and 30 each carry legs 39 and 41 ending in rollers 41 and 42 in a position close to the head of the bed, and corresponding feet not shown in a position close to the foot of the bed. In the position shown to in fig. 3, the support 30 is disposed partially below of the side piece 20 and the support 29 is arranged partially below the side piece 21, the slats 22 to 26 constituting an uninterrupted base and the panels 27 and 28 completely overlapping. The legs 33 and 40 are aligned below the side piece 20, and the legs 34 and 39 are aligned below the side piece 21.
The frame is thus arranged to constitute a single bed and to receive the mattress in the formation shown to in FIG. 1.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the elements 18 and 19 separated as described above to increase the width of the base by 50 </ B >% and to receive the mate las in the formation represented in in fig. 2. The ma telas has been represented in in fig. 5 in its first formation (dotted line 43) and in its second formation (mixed line 44).
We see in in fig. 5 that the edge 45 of the panel 27 has a recess 46 to receive the side piece 21 when the elements 18 and 19 </ B> are in the position shown to in fig. 3, and that the panel 28 moves relative to the panel 27 in the position of fig. 4 and 5 to increase the width of the bed. Furthermore, when the frame is in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the legs 39 and 40, as well as the corresponding legs near the foot of the bed, provide equal support to people lying on the bed. In fact, each 18 and 19 element supports itself.
Removable locking means and stops not shown can be used to precisely fix the elements 18 and 19 in the position of FIGS. 3 and 4.
Parts 2 and 3 of the mattress can be semi-permanently attached, for example by pressure buttons, to elements 18 and 19 </ B > to facilitate the transformation of the bed.
It is visible that the recesses 37 and 38 in the supports 29 and 30 could be omitted if, in the position shown to in fig. 3, supports 29 and 30 do not extend below side pieces 21 and 20.
