Abstract
1,268,035. Combustion apparatus. TORRAX SYSTEMS Inc. 16 Feb., 1970 [19 Feb., 1969], No. 7254/70. Heading F4B. A combustion chamber 18 is provided with a tangential upper fuel inlet 16, a lower combustion product outlet .34 and a bottom solids discharge outlet 38. The latter is connected to a water filled collection vessel (50, Fig. 2, not shown) sealed from the atmosphere. Preferably the chamber is used as a secondary combustion chamber in the refuse burning apparatus disclosed in Specification 1,198,603, but may burn any other combustible gas mixture. A controlled sub-atmospheric combustion air supply is tangentially drawn into fuel inlet 16 through conduit 24. Natural gas may be added through line 28. Chamber 18 is maintained at subatmospheric pressure by a fan 42 in outlet line 34 leading to a waste heat boiler 40 and a gas cleaner 44. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the upper part of the chamber forms a Venturi nozzle into the throat part of which a valve controlled air inlet pipe (88) debouches to draw the fuel into the chamber, the top part of which is maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure, combustion taking place downstream of the nozzle. A valve controlled conduit (92) for secondary air, also opens into the top of the chamber. Igniters 32 are provided.
