Abstract
1,267,293. Casting processes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 Jan., 1971 [12 Jan., 1970], No. 1412/70. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions G3 and H5] Apparatus for the electroslag remelting of metal comprises a plurality of moulds 25 supported by a common supporting means 27, a common supporting means 22 for a plurality of electrodes 21, the electrode supporting means 22 being restrained against downward movement during the electroslag remelting, and means for moving the mould supporting means 27 towards the electrode supporting means. The bottom of each continuous casting mould is initially closed by a base-plate 26 supported on a platform 32. The mould supporting means 27 and the platform 32 extend from carriages 28 and 33 respectively which are movable up and down a mast 24 in response to signals from a control unit 31 which combines signals from sensing devices 40 arranged to monitor the electrical parameters of the electrode circuits. The difference in speed between carriages 28 and 33 is controlled by a probe 41 monitoring the level of the slag 37 in one of the moulds. In an embodiment the moulds are arranged at the ends of six arms extending radially from a mast (55). In another embodiment the moulds are not of the continuous casting type but rest on a base-plate supported by the mould supporting means.
