A paper machine comprises a horizontal cylinder 2, a headbox 1 for feeding stock onto an ascending upper portion of the cylinder, feed roll 4, spaced from the stock outlet in the direction of slurry flow, an endless flexible wall 3 running downwardly from this roll about the surface of the cylinder, and a suction device 5 located at the side of the cylinder opposite to the feed roll, at the point where the flexible wall leaves the cylinder, wherein the upper lip 6 of the slice extends further in the direction of flow of stock than the lower lip, to cover the newly forming web between the end of the lower lip and the feed roll. The flexible wall 3 may be a wire or felt, and the cylinder may have one or more suction zones. Savealls 10 and cylinder-surface-cleaning devices 11 may be provided. A plurality of such machines may be provided along a common flexible wall to produce a multi-ply paper. The suction device may be a suction box or a suction roll. The paper may be couched by felt 8 and roll 9.
