Abstract
1,266,411. Feeding tobacco. SERVICE D' EXPLOITATION INDUSTRIELLE DES TABAUS ET DES ALLUMETTES. 17 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 8407/69. Heading A2C. [Also in Division B8] In a device for receiving a non-homogeneous stream of material such as tobacco in shredded or flake form and delivering a continuous, uniform outflow, the stream is accelerated along a passageway of decreasing cross-sectional area defined by a plurality of pairs of rotary impellers 102, 102'; 103, 103' &c. running at increasing speeds in the direction of flow and of outside diameters which decrease in proportion to the decrease in the flow area. As shown, three pairs of vaned impellers 102, 102'; 103, 103' and 104, 104' are spaced so as to leave a free flow area between the impellers of each pair whilst the impellers 105, 105' of a fourth pair are spaced such that the cylinders generated by their rotation are tangent to each other. The vertical spacing between impellers may be reduced, and in one embodiment, with seven pairs of impellers and a casing with straight, tapering sides, the vertical spacing between two pairs of impellers is reduced to such an extent that the generated cylinders intersect, the edges of the vanes having mating serrations to allow rotation at differing speeds. In a further embodiment the impellers in the upper stages have studs instead of vanes, and the casing may be dispensed with.
