Abstract

1,266,330. Pipe couplings. R. F. BRIGHT. 13 March, 1970 [13 Dec., 1968], No. 59469/68. Heading F2G. A ring is introduced into a socket end 2 or onto a spigot end 1 of a pipe P of clay, concrete &c., and held to the pipe wall by a layer of adhesive. The pipe spigot end ring 3 has a flange 3a abutting the pipe end, and a lip 3c locating a sealing ring 5, whereas the socket end ring 6 has a flange 6a with gripping serrations and a taper 66 at the other end. Upon mating of similar pipes P, the sealing ring 5 is radially compressed between the two rings 3, 6. Alternatively, a pipe socket 2 with an attached ring 6 can be mated with a plain pipe spigot, with or without a sealing ring, For retaining the rings 3, 6 whilst bonding, a heavy mandrel 9 is introduced into the socket 2 or on to the spigot 1. The rings 3, 6 are of synthetic plastics such as polyester resins which may be reinforced by fibrous and/or mineral fillers, rubbers and elastomers such as polyurethane plastisols, mineral and inorganic substances such as glass, and formed by casting, moulding or extruding. The adhesive is of filled or unfilled thermosetting resins such as epoxy resins, polyester resins, plastisols, iso-cyanate/polyester foams, and the fillers being of fibrous nature, powders, solid or hollow spheres, composed of organic or inorganic substances. Primers may also be used.
