Abstract

126,391. Brown, E. E. Jan. 29, 1917. Framework; planes, construction of.-Metallic spars or girders for aircraft are constructed of channel form with the web embossed to provide V or X shaped stiffening- ribs. Fig. 2 shows a channel member with ribs B; triangular bosses C may also be formed. In Fig. 4 are shown X. shaped ribs D with diamond-shaped bosses D<3>. As a modification, the flats between the ribs may be V or X shaped. Two channels may be secured back to back, in some cases with distance-blocks or an open frame interposed; a longitudinal strip may be secured to the outside of the flanges when abutting back to back. The ribs may be formed on a separate plate G, Fig. 8, riveted to the web and having its edges bent outwards to abut against the turned-over flanges F<3>. The edges of the flanges may be wired as shown in Fig. 9.
