Abstract

1,262,831. Recovering nitrocellulose. FRANCE ARMED FORCES, MINISTER OF. 5 Oct., 1970 [14 Oct., 1969], No. 47286/70. Heading C3A. [Also in Division C1] The calorimetric potential of an old propellent charge powder containing nitrocellulose is increased by extracting the powder with methylene chloride. For example, dinitrotoluene, dibutyl phthalate, and diphenylamine are removed from a single base powder by grinding in a stream of water and then extracting with the solvent. In another example a powder containing nitrocellulose, camphor, diphenylamine, potassium sulphate, and graphite is first treated with alcohol to remove the graphite. Extraction may be carried out at about 35‹ C. either batchwise or continuously. The treated powder may be used in the manufacture of sporting powders.
