Abstract

1,261,408. Electrodes for mercury cells. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. April 16, 1970 [May 1, 1969], No.22268/69. Heading C7B. An electrode for use in an electrolytic cell is made by taking a body of which at least the surface is a film-forming metal such as titanium, tantalum, niobium or their alloys, applying to at least part of the surface a paint composition and then heating in an oxidizing atmosphere, the paint composition consisting of an inert carrier and ruthenium chloride, preferably with a stabilizing compound such as ammonium chloride. The carrier may be isopropyl alcohol. The paint may be applied in a succession of coats, each being permitted to dry at room temperature before being heated. The heating may be at at least 250‹ C. and preferably at 500‹ C. The body is preferably etched before application of the coating.
