Abstract

The cathode for an electrolytic capacitor comprises a strip of metal provided with a porous coat of silver formed by heating a coat of paste applied to the metal strip at a temperature between 400-800 DEG C., the paste containing fine silver and/or a compound which decomposes to form silver on heating. The paste comprises a suspension of silver and/or compound thereof, usually silver oxide, in an organic liquid, e.g. acetone, which may also contain a dissolved macromolecular binding agent, such as polyvinylacetate, which decomposes and volatilizes completely at the temperature at which the strips are processed. The silver oxide decomposes to form silver at temperatures above 180 DEG C. The paste is applied by dipping the metal strip into the suspension. The treatment of silver strip metal is referred to.
