Abstract

1,167,992. Coating with Pt group metals; electrolysis of brine. ORONZIO DE NORA IMPIANTI ELETTROCHIMICI. June 13, 1967 [June 28, 1966], No.27293/67. Headings C7B and C7F. In a process of depositing a Pt group metal on to a valve metal such as Ti, a solution containing a soluble Pt group metal compound, an organic solvent and at least one component having a radical from the group -NH 3 , -NH 4 , -NH z and = NH, is applied to the substrate and heated to above 350‹C. The NH radical may be supplied as a component of the Pt compound or as the solvent or separately as a thickener or as an additional compound such as ammonium salts, hydrazine and derivatives in a quantity of 0À05-0À5% by weight. 20-25% of thickening agents may be added and the Pt group metal content forms 1À5-2À5% by weight of the composition. Many examples of suitable Pt group metal compounds and organic solvents such as formamide are given. The substrates may be plates or expanded mesh and the coating may be applied in several successive applications with intermediate heatings between each application. The coated products are used as electrodes in the electrolysis of NaCl brines in mercury cathode or diaphragm cells.
