Abstract

1358926 Electrocatalysts; coated electrodes SOLVAY ET CIE 29 July 1971 [29 July 1970] 35747/71 Headings B1E and B2E [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] Electrodes comprise a coating of catalytic material on a support made at least superficially of titanium or a titanium alloy, the catalytic material comprising one or more elements of the platinum group in the metallic and/or oxidised state and tellurium in the oxidised state. The tellurium may be partially replaced by molybdenum or tungsten and the catalytic material may also comprise chromium lead, bismuth, antimony, tin, cadmium, titanium, tantalum and/or niobium in the oxidised state. In the examples the compounds of the catalytic elements are applied in solution in an organic solvent to form a coating and the coated structure is heat-treated. The electrodes are tested in the electrolysis of brine with a flowing mercury cathode to produce chlorine. They can also be used in cathodic protection, water purification, other electrolytic processes and as fuel cell electrodes.
