Abstract

1,231,995. Coated titanium electrodes. PPG. INDUSTRIES Inc. 10 Oct., 1969 [14 Oct., 1968], No. 49749/69. Heading B2E. A method of producing an anode for the electrolysis of aqueous alkali metal chloride solutions comprises applying a mixture of a thermally-decomposable organic titanium compound and a thermally-decomposable platinum group metal compound to a titanium base and heating the coated base at a temperature below 650‹C., e.g. 300-650‹C., to decompose the coating to for man oxide of titanium, preferably TiO 2 and the platinum group metal oxide and/or the metal itself. The coating mixture may comprise a titanium resinate and a ruthenium resinate but many other organotitanium compounds and Pt group metal compounds are specified. The mixture may also contain resinates of other metals such as Re, Pb, Si, Ta, W, Mo, Ca and Zr which are also decomposed to the oxides on heating. A number of coatings may be applied to an electrode base, the latter being heated after each application to C.400-500‹C either in one step or in steps of 25-75‹C every 2-10 minutes.
