Abstract

1324924 Recoating anodes ELECTRONOR CORP 2 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 50907/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C7] Used metal electrodes having the remains of a conductive electro catalytic coating are recoated. The electrode is made of a "valve metal" i.e. titanium, tantalum, aluminium or an alloy thereof. The eleotrocatalytic coating is an oxide or oxides of a platinum-group metal such as ruthenium dioxide or indium oxide and it may additionally contain valve metal oxides such as titanium oxide or oxides of other metals such as tin oxide and cobalt oxide. The electrodes are cleaned by degreasing in perchlorethylene or etching in a solution containing HCl but the previous oxide film is not removed. A new coating similar to the old is applied in a series of coats by brush roller, electrostatic spraying or dipping. The electrode is dried and baked between coats at 300‹C-460‹C for 5-15 min and after the final coat heated to 450‹C for one hour. The electrode may be used as an anode in the production of chlorine.
