Abstract
1398211 Electrolysis electrode; coating with platinum iridium alloy ELECTRONOR CORP 18 May 1973 [19 May 1972] 23821/73 Headings C7B and C7F An electrolysis electrode, e.g. for use in producing Cl 2 or chlorates, comprises an electroconductive metallic base which is at least partially coated with a material comprising a Pt-Ir alloy and a co-deposited valve metal oxide present in an amount, calculated as free valve metal, from 2.5% to 20% of the total weight of the coating material. The base may be made of Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb, or valve metal. The electrode is made by applying to the base a solution or suspension of thermally decomposable salts of Pt, Ir and of a valve metal and then heating the base in the presence of air. The solution or suspension may additionally contain H 2 O 2 or a percarboxylic acid and may be applied as a series of coats with heating at 350-560‹C after each coating. The examples are of codepositing Pt-Ir alloy and TiO 2 on to Ti sheets which have been etched in refluxing azeotropic 20% hydrochloric acid. The coating compositions comprise PtCl 4 ; IrCl 3 , HCl, CH 3 CHOHCH 3 and TiCl 3 ÀH 2 O 2 . Most of the compositions also contain H 2 O 2 .
