Abstract

1,260,592. Railway systems. E. C. CHERTO. 17 Nov., 1969 [15 Nov., 1968], No. 56204/69. Heading B7L. A railway system includes a pair of horizontally spaced rails 4 suspended above the ground by means of columns 9 having ground-engaging bases 8, a rail vehicle having upper and lower cabins 20 and 22 respectively, connected by a stairway 23, frusto-conical drive wheels 3 supporting the vehicle on the rails 4, at least a major portion of the cabin 20 being above the rails 4 and at least a major portion of the lower cabin 22 below the rails 4 and a motor 1 connected to drive axle 7 of the drive wheels 3 so as to drive the wheels 3 and housed on the level of the cabin 20. The motor 1 may be a D.C. electric motor fed from a two-phase electrical supply after rectification via a pantograph-like structure mounted above the vehicle and in sliding electrical contact with overhead supply lines 18. The rails 4 are reinforced by H-section girders 15 and are attached to horizontal arms 13 supported in the vertical columns 9, the outer ends of the arms 13 being connected to the base parts 8 by means of tie rods 11. Double L-section beams 14 are imbedded in the columns 9 and support the overhead supply lines 18 via support beams 16 having flanges 17. The support beams 16 are connected at their upper ends by a horizontal cross member having on its lower surface an insulator of a ceramic or plastics material 19 for supporting the supply lines 18.
