Abstract

1,260,229. Hammer pistons. ATLAS COPCO A.B. 9 April, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 18149/69. Heading B4C. [Also in Division F2] Hammer pistons for use in percussive tools have plastics heads 2 formed on metal, preferably steel, shafts 1, so that different sized heads may be formed on identical shafts. The shafts may have an annular groove 6 which may be knurled for retention of the plastics head 2 or the shaft may have an undulating surface (13), Fig. 4 (not shown). A groove 12 may be provided so that air trapped therein when in use, may operate a valve to cushion an idle stroke. The shaft may have a cavity 3 with a screw thread 4 for a rifle rod and nut, and it may have straight splines 5 or straight and screwed splines, for rotation. The head is preferably injection moulded using a mould 10 and may be formed from polycarbonate, polyamide, polythene or various fluor-based and epoxy plastics. These may be reinforced with glass fibre or a metal ring 14, Fig. 5, having radial holes 15. The head may be at the centre of a reversible piston, Fig. 7 (not shown).
