The inserting and receiving grippers A, B, of rapiers of a shuttleless loom each have a stationary jaw 4, 24, and a jaw 5a, 25a, turnable about the axis of the grippers and resiliently urged towards the fixed jaw, the gripper B having a holding means 31 to hold jaw 25a in the open position until the grippers meet at the changeover point when member 31 is turned by a projection 4 on gripper A to release jaw 25a and allow it to close to grip the thread, a projection 25e on the jaw 25a simultaneously engaging the end of jaw 5a and moving it to its open position to release the thread, in which position it is held by a holding member 10a. At the end of the return movements of the grippers projection 33 on gripper B is engaged by a cam (H), Fig. 1 (not shown) to reopen jaw 25a to the position in which it is held by the end 31a of member 31 engaging a recess (25g), Fig. 8 (not shown) of the jaw 25a and member 10a on gripper A rides under a pivoted arm 13, Fig. 16, of an actuator G without being actuated thereby. At the beginning of the inward movements, jaw 25a remains open and member 10a is forced inwards by the actuator G to disengage from recess 5d and thereby release arm 5a which closes to grip the weft thread (C) for insertion. The jaws 5a, 25a are loaded by tension springs (8, 28), Figs. 7, 8 (not shown). The lever 13 of actuator G, Fig. 16, has a ramp 13b which causes the lever to lift and ride over the member 10a when gripper A is returning to the right, the member 10a being forced inwards by the end face of the lever 13 when gripper A moves to the left at the beginning of its inward stroke.
