Abstract
1,258,021. Electro-depositing Cr and hydrated Cr oxide. NIPPON KOKAN K. K. Jan. 2, 1970 [Jan. 13, 1969], No. 181/70. Heading C7B. A duplex layer of metallic chromium and hydrated chromium oxide is deposited on the surface of a steel plate by immersing the plate as a cathode in a chromium-containing electrolyte comprising chromic acid ions, one or more of thiocyanic acid, thiosulphuric acid, dithionous acid, sulphurous acid, thiosulphurous acid, pyrosulphurous acid, a salt of any of these acids or a sulphide as a first promoting agent, and one or more of hydrofluoric acid, hydrosilicofluoric acid, borofluoric acid or a salt of one of these acids as a second promoting agent. Preferably the concentration of chromic acid, expressed as CrO 3 , is 10-100 grams/litre and the concentrations of the two promoting agents are each from 1/500 to 1/25 of the weight of CrO 3 . The anode used may be of lead, lead-tin alloy or lead-antimony alloy, the temperature of the electrolyte 40-60‹ C. and the current density 10-45 amps/sq. dm.
