Abstract

1,232,426. Electro-deposition of iron. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. July 19, 1968 [Aug.4, 1967], No.34614/68. Heading C7B. [Also in Division F2] High strength metallic alloy gears, cams or bearing surfaces, are coated with a thin coating, e.g. between 0À01 inch to 0À0001 inch, of metallic iron to render the surfaces more amenable chemically to the lubricants having extreme pressure additives. The coating may be applied by known methods of vacuum coating, gas plating, or electro-plating. One such method uses the gear etc. as the cathode with a metallic iron or steel anode, the electrolyte being 300 grms/litre of ferrous chloride and 335 grms/litre of calcium chloride maintained at a temperature between 90 and 110‹ C., with a cathode current density between 100-180 amps/sq. ft. Again, 350 grms/litre of ferrous ammonium sulphate in 0À25 grms/litre of sulphonic acid may be used with a cathode density between 20 and 30 amps./sq. ft. at a temperature between 20‹ -30‹C. Examples of alloys for the gears etc. are given, e.g. stainless steel, nickel-, cobalt-, chromium-based alloys, as is a list of conventional extreme pressure additives.
