Abstract
1,257,781. Hydraulic reciprocating pumps. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 21, 1969 [March 8, 1968], No. 11590/68. Heading F1A. A pump has its cylinder 10 separated by a space 28 from an enclosing pressure vessel 20, the space 28 being arranged to receive fluid pumped from the cylinder past an annular lift valve 14, 15. This arrangement causes the cylinder 10 to be subjected to cyclic compressive stress instead of cyclic tensile stress, thereby to reduce the effects of fatigue. Fluid is discharged from the space 28 at a steady pressure through a drilling 45, an annular space 18 and an outlet line 44, 46. To allow for changes in the supply requirements the space 28 includes a variable accumulator space 34. Thus the pressure vessel 20 and a low-pressure cylinder 6 secured thereto are slidable on fixed pillars 22 and a base 2, 3 to vary the volume of the space 34. Increases in volume are resisted by the pressure of fluid admitted through lines 42, 38 to the low-pressure cylinder 6 for flow therefrom through a passage 39, 40 and a valve 41 to the pumping cylinder 10. Fluid in the cylinder 6 also serves as the loading for the outlet valve 14, 15. (For Figure see next page)
