Abstract

1,257,305. Access openings in pipes. MARLEY TILE CO. Ltd. 9 April, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 17000/68. Heading F2P. A length of pipe 1, or pipe branch, has at each end either a spigot 3 or a socket 2, an access hole 4 in the wall of the pipe in combination with a cover 9, and a strap 10 for surrounding the circumference of the cover to secure it to the pipe and close the hole. The pipe has a flange 8 which surrounds the hole 4 the cover having a co-operating flange 14 to present surfaces directed outwardly from the hole for engagement by a channel, or recess 15, on the inside circumference of the strap 10 when positioned around the cover. The strap has means for shortening its circumference, the engagement of the flanges 8, 14 with the channel, or recess 15 being such so that, upon tightening of the strap, the cover is pressed into engagement with the flange 8 throughout its circumferential length. The pipe length 1, used, e.g. for underground drainage, is formed from polyvinyl chloride, the hole 4 being of elliptical shape and having a surrounding wall 6 which carries the flange 8, the cover 9, which has a cylindrical surface 11 to complete the wall of the pipe when the cover is in position, having a side wall 12 which carries the flange 14. The flanges 8, 14 have co-operating recesses 15 to receive an O ring, not shown, and have tapered surfaces 16, 16, which mate exactly with the corresponding recess 15 of the strap 10, the latter being formed of two similar parts 17, 18 which can be connected together by bolts and nuts 22, 23. Similar kinds of covers for access openings in branched and curved pipes are also described, Figs. 4, 5, not shown.
