[Also in Division F2] A device for use in the winding or unwinding of webs, e.g. of paper or plastics foil, is provided with winding shafts having couplings which facilitate the insertion or removal of a spindle carrying the web roll. As shown, a winding device comprises two coaxially mounted rotary plates 2, 21 carrying winding shafts (5, 6, 5<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP>) Fig. 2 (not shown) having couplings (12, 13, 12<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>1</SP>) to receive the ends of a spindle 14 of a web roll which can be moved from a loading position A to a working position A<SP>1</SP> by rotation of the plates 2, 2<SP>1</SP>. Each coupling comprises a cylindrical sleeve 15 having a central bore 16 which is formed with a radial recess 17 extending to the sleeve periphery this recess permitting radial insertion and removal of the associated spindle 14. The sleeve 15 carries an axially displaceable ring 18 which closes the recess 17, to retain spindle 14 in position, by means of a bush 19 when the ring 18 is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, but which opens the recess 17, to enable the spindle to be inserted into or removed from the coupling, when in the position shown in chain-dotted lines. At its inner end the bore 16 is provided with a flat 24 corresponding to a flat 25 on the spindle 14, and the sleeve is further provided with an annular bead 26 complementary in shape to a groove 27 in the spindle. The radial recess 17 is preferably provided with an enlarged entryportion having the shape of an annular sector, the bush 19 being of complementary shape (Fig. 4, not shown). The ring 18 may be temporarily locked in its open or closed position on the sleeve 15 by means of a spring-loaded detent member 20 which co-operates with part spherical seatings or circumferential grooves 23 in the sleeve periphery.
