Abstract

942,384. Mandrels. NASHUA INDUSTRIAL MACHINE CORPORATION. Dec. 3, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 41097/59. Heading B3B. [Also in Division F2] An expansible shaft on which rolls of paper or other web material are supported during winding or unwinding is actuated by fluid pressure. The shaft has an outer perforated shell 24 of metal fixed on an enlarged portion 25 of a journal 21. Radial passages 29 are provided in the shell 24 through which gripping members project, each member having a gripping portion 36 and a flange 40 connecting pairs of members. The gripping members may be of polyvinyl chloride or any other flexible material. A metal ferrule 37 is fitted over the portions 36, the ferrules each having ribs 38 which assist in preventing rotation of a winding core 23, Fig. 1 (not shown). When pressure is applied to the inner faces of the flanges 40 the portions 36 deform outwardly and radially of passages 29 to increase the overall diameter of the shaft so as to grip the winding core. Pressure is applied to the faces by an air container 43, e.g. of rubber supplied with air under pressure through a valve. A polygonal filler 54 of metal or wood prevents the collapse of the air container 43. Normally flat leafsprings 41, 42, Fig. 3, encircling each gripping member retract the members upon the release of air pressure.
